Cathaya argyrophylla est la seule espèce actuelle du genre Cathaya, un genre d'arbres de la famille des Pinaceae. Il fait partie de la sous-famille des Laricoideae, tout comme le genre Larix (les Mélèzes) et le genre Pseudotsuga.
